Appliance of the Year 2006

So, my birthday is coming up, and I usually end up with a combination of cash and Amazon certificates. In the past, I’ve used these to pick up a small appliance I’ve been coveting but this year, I am at an impasse. I’ve already got the standard stuff (blender, food processor, stick blender) and some not so standard stuff (ice cream maker, electric kettle, single serve coffee machine).

Currently, I’m leaning towards a fuzzy logic rice cooker but I’m not sure I would use it enough to justify the amount of countertop space it would occupy, although a rice dish is often my default option when I just want everyone fed and out of my freakin’ face already.

What about you guys? What appliance do you think every semi-serious cook should have?

Breadmaker? Home wine- or beer-making set?
Manual “appliances”: outstanding cutlery or cookware?

Actually, I had a breadmaker and I gave it up in favor of making bread by hand — something I’m planning to post about this week, with the weather changing. New cookware is a pretty good idea, now that I think of it. Thanks!

I was thinking about this more later in the day…have you explored Zabar’s second floor? LOTS of ways to spend your moola!

Y’know, every time I’ve been to Zabar’s I’ve had a stroller with me, which pretty much rules out stairs. What about Broadway Panhandler? Have you been there?

I’m partial to Le Creuset myself - for my birthday this year I received the large stockpot in cerise - perfect for stock, triple batches of chili, or lots of people over for pasta. I love the heft, the durability, the bossness of the stuff.

BTW, you’re responsible for one of my most favorite kitchen things EVER - the stainless steel French press. It’s been 2 (3?) years and I still sigh with pleasure when I look at the damn thing.

Oh hells yeah! Why didn’t I think of Le Creuset?

You definitely have to visit Zabar’s second floor…lots to choose from in a variety of product categories at different price points.

I don’t have a lot of experience with the Panhandler…did buy a high-quality food scale there, though. Although it may have been because of a sale, I had to content with a frustratingly long line.

I wish this blog informed commenters when you’ve responded…it would help keep the conversation flowing.
