In which I prove, conclusively, that I am both sentimental and a dork.
Oscar night (which I am only just now getting around to talking about) has always been A Very Big Deal in our household. I am married to not just a movie lover, but a movie lover with a degree in film from NYU. (I like to mention it now and then. It makes me swear less when I pay the student loan bills.)
It is also a big deal because our first Oscar night together was somewhat of a disaster. We had just moved in together earlier that very same day, into what had been my apartment — with its bizarre TV reception. Every so often, the sound would just fritz out, replaced by a high-pitched drone, but it never lasted more than 10 or 20 minutes.
So, there we were: exhausted from moving, plus all the we really live together now, huh? feelings, and we settled in to watch the Oscars. Billy Crystal was 3 minutes into an atrocious monologue/song, and the sound went out. And stayed out. For hours.
I tried to make light of the situation, but my poor not-yet-husband was disheartened. That was… seven Oscar nights ago. I know he’s long forgotten about it, other than just a funny anecdote, but I still remember how crestfallen he looked, since then I’ve got out of my way to make every Oscar night a special occasion.
Here’s what I set out for our Oscar Night 2007:
Looks like just a bunch of antipasti-ish snacks, but here’s where I let my dork flag fly:
Let me lay it out for you another way:
- Ossau iraty cheese
- Salami
- Cipollini onions
- Alfonso olives
- Roasted peppers
I actually put out a couple other foods after this —crudités and such — just so we wouldn’t die from all that salt, but, yeah…

NERRRRD!

How much do I love that tablecloth?
Enough that I might steal it if I lived closer.

This is utterly charming! You know, how you respond to the tough moments like that first Oscar night is a better indicator of love than how much you both enjoy the good times. That part’s easy [and if it’s not, then run like hell]. Sounds like you two have a lifetime of Oscar nights ahead of you. Congratulations!

This is how much of a geek I am.
I looked at the photo and went ” Ooh. Archer Farms! I LOVE Target.”

Your first Oscar night reminds me of my first World Series experience with my now-husband, then-live in boyfriend. It got late and I had to get up in the morning so I went to bed. He came fuming into bed shortly thereafter (I was asleep already) and the next day lit into me, telling me he felt “manipulated” into missing one of the most important baseball games of the year! Needless to say, I was totally shocked, not realizing yet that baseball was a God to him, and he hadn’t realized that I really didn’t expect him to come to bed with me. Complete failure of communication…
