International meals with $25 from Alyce

By Kristen | June 29, 2007

Twenty-five dollars takes you a hell of a lot further than you might think here in NYC.

I don’t know why these Donation Derby trips end up turning into mini-vacations, but here’s how I spent $25 from Alyce.

going to Staten Island

Okay, so I didn’t do anything quite as glamorous as that photo might lead you to believe.

After my class on Saturday, my husband and I (plus enstrollered kid) walked from 13th Street to South Ferry. I don’t know it happened; we just started walking and by the time we were at South Street Seaport1 we realized we might as well keep walking to get to 1 subway line.

Instead, we decided to ride the ferry to Staten Island and back again.

so long, Manhattan

It was pretty windy.

it was windy

I don’t know what it is, but seeing the Statue of Liberty is so totally cool…

Statue of Liberty - perhaps you're heard of it?

…but photographing it just makes it look dinky.

Anyway, once we got back, we walked back uptown to Chinatown, for one of my favorite foods ever: Big Wong King’s roast pork. First, we had to wait for a table.

Then, the money shot:

We ate, we paid the check, we left… and I realized we still had $12 left.

Naturally, there’s only one solution to this problem:

TACOS!

TACOS.

The end.

  1. Yeesh. What the shit is that place about? []

Yay! That looks delicious. I am a huge huge huge fan of Chinese roast pork (ate it twice, plus about 7 other Chinese meals, while JB and I were in NYC in May). This was the perfect way to spend my cash.

    Hooray!

Do you remember where you got roast pork while in NYC? I love Big Wong’s but I’m willing to cheat on them once in a while.

We went to Big Wong one of the times and the other was a place in midtown - 48th maybe. It was just a tasty dish from an otherwise average Chinese place. They looked like they got a ton of lunch customers.

    Big Wong was far superior.

    I spy cotija!

Man, I love me some tacos.

I actually had to look up cotija, but yes, I think you’re right.

I kinda shortchanged the tacos, which were freakin’ great. We’ve walked by the place we got them from for a year now. From the outside, it looks like just a bodega, but we realized about a week ago they serve food in there too.

Those tacos look AMAZING! Wonder if they’d share a recipe. mmmmmmm

Seeing as we have to order said tacos through an elaborate system of menu pointing and hand gestures, I’m thinking a recipe is probably out of the question.

Two of my favorite ways to view Manhattan when I’m in New York are from the deck of the Staten Island Ferry and walking the Brooklyn Bridge from the Brooklyn side.
