Top Chef: Week 5

I gotta cut right to chase on this one…

What the hell? Am I a Top Chef favorite jinx?

Me: Micah is my favorite!

Next week: ka-BOOT.

Me: No wait, Lia is my favorite!

Next week: KA-BOOT!

Damn. I’m not declaring favorites anymore.

No, wait.

OMG I LUV CASEY AND SHE IS MY FAVERIT EVAR!!!11

That oughta take care of her.

Moving on: Oh, Hung. Every time I see your mouth moving, all I hear is “This is everyone’s fault but mine!”

The Howie and Joey Bagadonuts friendship just really touches me. I’m glad to see Howie lose his “I ain’t here to make friends, dammit!” attitude and I’m glad to see Joey being less of a douchebag. I was even kind of glad to see each of them win something this week — not that either of them are my favorites, just so you know, Top Chef gods.

Come on — was anyone fooled by the “don’t worry, guys; you have three hours! PSYCH! you actually have only 90 minutes! MWAH HA HAH!” ploy? Seriously?

Now, here’s what I don’t get about this week’s elimination. How can Lia go from winning last week to being kicked off this week? Didn’t Casey make something crappy last week as well? How can you screw up rice and still stay on the show?

Not to mention, it’s been five shows, five eliminations… and, with the exception of Cliff the Idiot, all of them have been women: Blonde Fauxhawk Girl, Micah, Camille, Lia. What the fuck is up with that? Even Micah and Lia, who each won one of the elimination challenges, got the boot. I don’t know about you guys, but I don’t think any of the remaining women are potential winners. And that peeves me. A lot.

If it will help… “Oh Top Chef gods, Casey is my favorite and is the best chef EVER!”

Ok. I rationalized it when Camille was sent home. But having watched this episode twice… never mind that Lia was my fav, didn’t both Hung and Casey have serious issues with their rice? Lia tried to stretch and create something new, while Hung made arroz con pollo. And, as is consistent for him, he denies ever making anything that isn’t the best and constantly disputes the judges, ummm, judgement. Maybe he needs his monkey to help him? Sorry, that was probably uncalled for. And his attitude and lack of safety in the kitchen… ok, I’m done.

I agree on the Howie/Joey friendship - and that was a classy and gutsy move on Howie’s part, to tell the judges that Joey’s dish was his personal favorite. And extra classy to give Joey the prize bottle in front of everyone.

While I think Chef Tom (’cuz we’re on a first name basis, y’know) would probably say that gender doesn’t enter into his decision-making process, it is noticeable that there were justifiable opportunities in both episode 4 and 5 to eliminate a male chef and yet a female chef was chosen. And, come to think of it, the two winners of TC #1 and #2 were men as well. Are we seeing a bais here, is it something that’s endemic to the “chef community,” or is it just that the men have outcooked the women? Honestly, I don’t have a clue, but I think you raise a good point, Kristen.
