I am a marketing guy’s dream.
Remember when you’d get a “Mystery Flavor” Dum Dum lollipop in your Halloween candy? And, as you’d eat it, you’d think apple? or cream soda? maybe cherry?
And now, the snack food equivalent of that lollipop:
Seriously. How could I not buy that? It looks like a science project. Plus, they’re Doritos — and who am I to disobey the salty whims of PMS?
I wish I could say it was as interesting as a Mystery Flavor pop, but after a couple chips, you realize what the mystery flavor is: cheeseburger.
Then you realize, it doesn’t just taste like a cheeseburger: it tastes exactly like a Burger King cheeseburger. Like a crispy, crunchy Burger King cheeseburger — with a hint of corn.
It’s unnerving. And yet awesome at the same time.

Until you stop to think about how they’ve made a corn chip taste like a cheeseburger.

I KNOW. It made me wish I had drugs just so I could snack and ponder the mysteries of the universe at the same time.
Seriously, though? Ingredients include “natural and artificial flavors (including beef and wheat).”

It looks like biohazard!
Tandoori-flavored Doritos are available in Canada.

Again, I find myself saying I KNOW! It’s a scary looking bag.
Come to think of it, Walkers (in the UK) makes a steak-flavo(u)red crisp that’s a lot like this.

The guys I work with had come up with a scheme a while back for a line of products called “Might-Be”. Stocked at the grocery store would be something like “Might Be Mustard”. You had a 1 in 4 chance that it was very good mustard, a 2 in 4 chance that it was regular mustard, and a 1 in 4 chance that it was something else entirely. I was convinced - I’m a sucker for a surprise.

Oooo!! Where I grew up in Asia they had a snack called Burger Rings that was corn puffs with burger flavoring! I LOVED that stuff (though, um, not many other people did. it wasn’t very popular).

I’m glad to know I wasn’t the only one excited for a dum-dum mystery lollipop! I loved those things.. I want one now actually!

Vosges Haut Chocolat recently produced a dark chocolate candy bar with bacon, a strange concoction even by their exotic standards. Liking sweet/salty mixes, we of course had to try it. The first bite was totally weird. The second seemed to work a little better, but even with successive bites, it never became an omigod experience. That must have been the general concensus—it’s not on their website now.

Laura: Me too!
Tinymich: Burger rings sounds… kind of awesome.
Andrea: You can go to the site and buy an entire box of just the Mystery Flavor lollipops.
Terry: I saw chocolate very much like that the last time I was in (of all places) Target. I couldn’t imagine who pops in to pick up toilet paper and cat food and goes, “oh, yeah, I need some chocolate with chiles, too.”
