Dear Brita, it’s over between us.

Friday, November 30th, 2007

I hate my Brita water pitcher so much I would rather destroy the planet with bottled water.
There, I said it.
A little background info: before we moved to New York, when we still lived in the suburbs and had access to a Costco, we bought a bulk pack of Brita filters. Twenty filters, in fact.
Let me […]

Thanksgiving: the food parts

Monday, November 26th, 2007

Despite all the good advice I received, I did not brine the turkey.
My family… well, they’re slow to embrace change.1 And, to keep everyone happy, I made a non-brined, but still very good turkey instead.

Tuesday afternoon, I was heading downtown to visit my academic adviser to pick next semester’s classes1. I was really early so I popped over to pick up a […]

2 down, 1 to go

Monday, November 5th, 2007

Last December, I made a seemingly simple resolution: learn to bake. I decided (quite arbitrarily) that I needed to make a cake, a pie crust, and something else before I decided it was done.
Since then, I’ve made a (quite good) cake, (kinda horrible) frosting, and a pie (bad filling but good crust).
To consider this […]

News that make me almost have a stroke:

“I would suspect that the average consumer would believe that [Italian-themed chain restaurants like Olive Garden] were serving a healthy Mediterranean fare,” agreed Dr. Charles Clark, professor of medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis.
