Resolutions: 2007 — the wrap-up

Friday, December 28th, 2007

I made some food-related resolutions around this time last year. Let’s see how they turned out!
Learn to bake. Although I never did make a third baked good, more importantly, I realized I’m no longer afraid to bake something new. I made cakes, I made frosting, I made a pie crust — and I already knew […]

The aforementioned best cookies.

Friday, December 28th, 2007

I’m not generally a chocolate chip cookie lover. I’m just not. They’re either too thin, too crispy, too doughy, too something and never in a good way.
But it was Christmas and we heard Santa only really likes chocolate chip cookies, so I went looking for a recipe.
Now, I love AllRecipes. Love it. It’s the […]

What I’ve been doing for the past week:

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

Making food — the best chocolate chip cookies ever, French toast with raspberry sauce, my grandmother’s meat sauce, a lasagna so good I almost cried, roasted vegetable stock — all of which entailed a lot of standing around thusly:

When I wasn’t doing that, I was wrapping gifts, hiding gifts, forgetting where I hid said gifts, […]

Why I love Big Lots, part 2

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

Years ago, I saw a PBS documentaries called, quite simply, A Hot Dog Program. Since then, I’ve seen it several more times (it’s also available on Netflix, I think) because that’s how much I love hot dogs. It borders on unnatural.
In this documentary, one of the segments is about a Cleveland hot dog specialty, Stadium […]

Les ananas ne parlent pas?

In my efforts to learn French this semester, I’ve been trying to watch, read or listen to something in French every day.
I listen to Radio France International’s 10-minute podcast en français facile.
I watch Le Journal (with subtitles) on WNYE.
And I’ve been trying to read food blogs in French. I say “try” because, […]

Shove off, Toblerone.

I have a new Swiss favorite: raclette.
My mother-in-law sent me a gift certificate from my birthday, and I promptly went out and bought this grill/griddle/raclette maker.

So, that’s the raclette cheese, some salami, cornichons and small Yukon Golds.
First, a warning.

Using the whole turkey.

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007

I try to keep a list of things I want to blog about. Sometimes they’re specific (”crazy chips from Big Lots”) and sometimes they’re more vague. Case in point, I’ve had “using the whole turkey” on my list since I came home from my mom’s house over Thanksgiving.
I had kinda forgotten where I intended […]

I say this every year…

Sunday, December 2nd, 2007

Or at least I said it last year:

Seven years ago today, I got married, because eight years ago today, I sat down in a Starbucks and fell in love.
You should all be so lucky.

Why I love Big Lots, part 1

Saturday, December 1st, 2007

Big Lots (for those of you who’ve never been to one) is where products go to die — where weird items no one ever really wanted end up, like a consumer orphanage. You will find things at Big Lots you never knew existed, or even why they existed… and this is why I make a […]
