City Council Passes Bill for Recycling of Plastic Bags
Do you know many NYC stores currently offer plastic bag recycling?
ONE: Whole Foods. And some D’Agostino’s (but not all) — not that there are any in my neighborhood. Not even the Greenmarket currently offers bag recycling (but they will soon, according to an email I just got).
Here’s a small quote from the news article: “Altogether, each year the country is estimated to use 86 billion bags, which end up blowing down city streets, or tangled in the stomachs of whales and sea turtles, or buried in landfills where, environmental organizations say, they persist for as long as 1,000 years.” And you know I think about that every time my hand hovers over the trash to throw one out.
I could seriously get up and do a little jig right now.

If that made you want to dance a jig, Kristen, this news will make you want to do a backflip. China, not exactly a shining example of environmentalism, has banned all plastic bags. As of June 1, all stores, from the largest to the smallest, must go bag-free. For the practical Chinese, it’s a matter of not wasting 37 million barrels of oil a year on bags. It’s also a chance to polish their image for the Olympics. Whatever the reason, it’s good news for the planet.

I saw! Did you see one of the accompanying news photos? It was of a shopper toting away bags full of beer. Not bottles or cans — I mean a bag filled with beer. I was so intrigued I almost didn’t want them to give up bags so I could see it myself.
