Yummr?

By Kristen | January 11, 2008

Am I the only person who uses Yummr?

Here’s their About Us page:

Yummr is a community of folks who are passionate about good food and drink and enjoy sharing their obsession and connecting with others. It’s the place to share food-related experiences, recipes, reviews, photos, and videos.

Yummr allows members to create their own foodie profiles complete with blogs, photos, galleries, and friends. In addition, members can participate in fun activities such as polls and surveys, submitting recipes, uploading photos of their meals via cameraphone, submitting reviews, and creating their own cooking videos (and we’re just getting started!).

Participation earns members “food stamps” which can (soon) be redeemed for cool stuff in our Bazaar such as gift certificates to fine retailers, complimentary dining at fine restaurants, the latest kitchen appliances, and much more! How great is that?

Yeah, so it’s basically FoodFacebook, only instead of 59,000,000 users, they have… 299. Which I really don’t get. All the necessary elements seem to be there (message boards, blogs, photo posting, ability to add people as friends) and some extra (that food point system seems cool, although there’s nothing you can redeem them for yet). So why isn’t this taking off? If you look at Ravelry — which is, in essence, KnittingFacebook — they’ve been around almost as long, but they’ve got something like 60,000 members.

So, what gives?

I know this sounds really shallow, but I’m kind of put off by the name! Shades of Rachael Ray. But I’ve never heard of it before today, so now that I’m looking at it, it seems really fun and I might sign up.

Well, considering I’d never heard of it before this post, I reckon Yummr (and I agree with Lisa that the name is off-putting) ain’t doin’ a swell job at PR.

Lisa: I seriously considered editing out their “How cool is that?” for that same reason.

Beth: The weirdest part, they’re owned empowered by this company, “a leading provider of word of mouth (WOM) and social media marketing and technology solutions that allow companies to democratize their brands by engaging and empowering passionate consumers, cultivate long-lasting loyalty and generate awareness for their brands, products, services and causes.”

Wow. I need a shovel after just reading that.

I’m a member and just got a package of cookie cutters from them in the mail unexpectedly.

Yeah, I got those, too. And an apron, which is actually kind of decent.
