Doing good.
By Kristen | May 1, 2008
On the first of every month, I get ad revenue. As I’ve mentioned before, I use this money to cover the costs of keeping this site up and running, and I donate the rest.
This month’s revenue went to DonorsChoose.org — and more specifically, to my neighborhood’s kindergarten. Here’s an excerpt from the kindergarten teacher’s proposal:
My students gather together many times a day in our meeting area, which at the moment is an old, thin, dull-gray rug that just barely fits all of them. I’ve marked off individual spots on the rug using masking tape, which gets pulled off periodically. The result is a sad-looking space that’s also not very comfortable. At the beginning of the year, a few classes got new rugs. However, my class was not granted its request. In addition, our kindergarten classes were moved from the main school building to the trailers in the parking lot of the school this year. The classrooms at our school are large and well-equipped for early education; the trailers are not.
I pass by this school almost every day. I had no idea they used those two grim-looking trailers as actual classrooms. I had assumed it was offices or storage space or something — not where 5-year-olds arrive to get their first taste of learning. Sometimes I forget how fucking fortunate I am to be able to stay home with my own 5-year-old kid and let her learn whatever the hell she wants to, because honestly, I think I’d cry if I had to walk her down to one of those trailers every morning and wonder if her masking tape spot on the meeting rug was still there that day.

Thanks for your donation! I hope we’ll be able to fund that whole rug project.

I really hope so, too.
Here’s hoping for big ad money this month! [crosses fingers]
