Eat Local Challenge
« Previous EntriesChanges afoot.
Tuesday, June 5th, 2007Last week, I was in the middle of writing my final analysis of the Eat Local Challenge when I heard the key turn in the door. It was midday on Wednesday. Before my husband even got all the way in the door, I knew what was up: his magazine folded.
After a minute or two […]
ELC Day 6: I go to Key Food.
Saturday, May 26th, 2007I finally broke down and bought some decidedly un-local food. I don’t know whether to count this towards my totals or not because, well, you’ll see what I bought in a minute:
- microwave popcorn ($2.99)
- microwave kettle corn ($2.89)
- all-natural Skippy ($2.69)1
- Goldfish crackers ($1.99)
- Amish Country Farms organic milk ($4.59 for a half-gallon)
Grand total: […]
ELC Day… something… 5?
Friday, May 25th, 2007Went to the Union Square Greenmarket today. Maybe I’m just tired of going there or maybe there were less farmers there because it’s the Friday before a long weekend, but I just didn’t see a damn thing I wanted. I still bought the following:
- apples ($3.00 for 3 lbs)1
- gai lohn ($3.00)2
- 1/4 lb of […]
ELC Day 4: notes on the halfway point
Thursday, May 24th, 2007For lunch today, I ate most of the cheese I bought yesterday. I wish I had noted where I bought it from, because it’s heavenly; creamy and studded with caraway seeds, I had to force myself to tuck the rest away for later.
And why do I need to do that? Because I feel like […]
ELC Day 3
Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007I have just returned home from the Union Square Greenmarket with the following:
- another Fizzy Lizzy soda ($1.69 at Whole Foods)
- a loaf of bread ($4.00)
- dandelion greens and spinach ($5.00)
- turkey sausage because the turkey thighs were so good ($9.20 for about 1.5 lbs)
- grape tomatoes ($3.50)
- cheese (about .3 lbs for $7.00)
- a […]
ELC Day 1: At the grocery store.
Monday, May 21st, 2007Well, with all this iced coffee I’ve been drinking, I’m really blowing through the milk. The Columbia Greenmarket didn’t have any (or was gone by the time I got there) yesterday, and evidently, on Mondays, the only Greenmarket in Manhattan is Union Square.
Instead, I went to Frank’s Gourmet Market and bought the following:
a chocolate […]
Some thoughts on ELC before I start
Sunday, May 20th, 2007While I was cooking just now, I realized why $121 seems like both too much and not enough to spend on food for the week.
It seems like far too much because I never spend anything close to $121 on groceries every week — $75, maybe $95, but not as much as $121. But, then […]
ELC: Day 1 (sort of)
Sunday, May 20th, 2007I just came back from the Columbia Greenmarket (Broadway between 114th and 115th Streets), where I bought the following:
about 4 lbs. boneless, skinless turkey thighs
3 lbs. apples
a small bunch of asparagus
a loaf of bread
a dozen eggs
Grand total: $19.85
More specifically:
The turkey was $2.20/lb, for a total of $8.90.
The apples and asparagus were $5.95.
The bread was […]
Countdown to Eat Local Challenge
Friday, May 18th, 2007First, let me say, I am in a cooking — and blogging — rut.
My kitchen started to fall into disarray while my mother-in-law was visiting: the sink and counter filled with dishes, the floor became a dumping ground for the stuff we bought while she was here. It fell even further into decay when […]
Hiatus: over.
Friday, May 11th, 2007Do you know how much stuff I’ve been doing lately? It’s crazy. Let me sum up, list-style:
I got sick. For like, a full week. This never happens.
The house fell into a shambles.
I started tidying up and the kid got whatever I had.
She got over it, then I had to embark on mad cleaning spree.
My mother-in-law […]
